MONTRÉAL, QC, Canada — A janitor at the Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport was suspended after he alerted officials of holes in their security procedures, according to the Montréal Gazette.

John Daniel Sweeney, who began working at the airport September 17, 2009, was suspended following a conference with Aéroports de Montréal and Transport Canada officials, a meeting they requested after receiving an e-mail from Sweeney about alleged security flaws, the story stated.

According to the story, Sweeney sent an e-mail that detailed two occasions the previous weekend when Canadian clearance officers in the airport's new U.S. wing "permitted large mobile garbage containers ... filled with stuffed black garbage bags to be admitted from the Canadian public area into U.S. territory and customs offices without any inspection whatsoever."

Following his meeting with officials, Sweeney was ordered to hand over his security pass and his company shirt because he had violated procedures that require any complaints to be channeled through Empire Maintenance Industries Inc., the contract company that cleans and maintains the airport, the story noted.

Sweeney, who was simply trying to notify authorities of an apparent security flaw to protect staff and patrons of the airport, was never told if his suspension was with or without pay, the story added.
