DOL Awards $1.8M in Training to Former Georgia-Pacific Employees

August 13, 2025

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced it will award US$1.8 million to the Technical College System of Georgia to support employment and training services for people affected by layoffs at Georgia-Pacific LLC, a manufacturer and distributor of restroom paper products and dispensers.

On May 14, Georgia-Pacific announced the permanent closure of its Cedar Springs, Georgia, containerboard processing mill, which resulted in a mass layoff that began on Aug. 1. Georgia-Pacific estimated that 535 individuals will be impacted by the closure.

The employment support services will be distributed through a National Dislocated Worker Grant. Supported by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014, National Dislocated Worker Grants provide a state or local board with funding for direct services and assistance in areas experiencing a major economic dislocation event that leads to workforce needs exceeding available resources.
