EPA Safer Choice Preparing a National Outreach Campaign for 2023
The U.S. EPA Safer Choice program will launch a national outreach campaign in 2023 designed to increase awareness of cleaning and related products certified by the program, as well as those disinfectants certified under the EPA Design for the Environment (DfE) program. This national outreach campaign will consist of two prongs: one focused on household consumers that will be launched in the spring of 2023, and the other that will expand to include institutional and industrial customers in the fall of 2023.
Safer Choice is a voluntary program operated by the EPA that helps household consumers and institutional purchasers identify cleaning and related products that meet high standards for human and environmental health, and likewise for disinfectants under the EPA’s DfE logo.
In executing the outreach campaign, the EPA will leverage its social media as well as develop a toolkit for its Safer Choice partners with messaging targeting both household consumers and institutional purchasers. The outreach campaign’s core message will stress that Safer Choice-certified products are made with ingredients that are safer for people, pets, and the planet, and are just as effective as “traditional” cleaners. In addition, the messaging will emphasize that looking for the Safer Choice label or DfE logo is an easy and reliable way to find products that have been carefully reviewed by EPA scientists and meet a rigorous set of chemical and toxicological standards.
As part of the national outreach campaign, the EPA is encouraging its Safer Choice partners to become involved and help support the effort by:
- Engaging with Safer Choice on social media (#EPASaferChoice; Facebook: @EPASaferChoice)
- Using the EPA toolkit to promote a manufacturer’s Safer Choice-certified products on its website, in presentations, etc.
- Including reference to Safer Choice in manufacturer’s advertising
- Hosting Safer Choice on a manufacturer’s blog, podcast, or newsletter
- Planning a spring cleaning or back-to-school event featuring Safer Choice and DfE-certified products.
Safer Choice Partners are encouraged to contact Taylor Dunivin, EPA Safer Choice, at [email protected] to learn how they can support the national outreach campaign.
