Central Valley Schools Struggle with Labor Intensive Floor-Stripping Process

Central Valley School District struggled to maintain its floors due to heavy foot traffic, particularly in the middle school cafeteria, which serves up to 1,000 students multiple times a day and doubles as a practice space for sports teams. The district’s previous floor stripping and waxing process was costly, time-consuming, and required two custodians to work five days straight, leading
to staffing challenges.

Simplified Maintenance with EZ CARE

The district implemented the SC Johnson Professional EZ CARE Floor Care System, which simplifies floor refinishing with a high-performance coating and remover, when used with the proprietary high-speed conditioning and polishing pad. Unlike traditional mop-and-bucket stripping, the EZ CARE remover can be used with an auto-scrubber, reducing labor costs and product usage.

The switch led to a 70% reduction in labor costs per application. Instead of two custodians working five days, the process now takes only one and a half days, saving seven days of labor per application, equating to over $1,200 saved per application.

“With the EZ Care System, we don’t think we’ll have to do this twice a year,” said William Coder, custodial supervisor, Central Valley School District. “We can do a high-speed buff at the end of the year and leave it alone. We won’t have to wax in the summer. I think we can go at least a year and up to 18 months without refinishing our floors and save the associated maintenance costs.”

Coder says they used half the product to strip the floor, and when it was done, the finish smelled much more pleasant, creating a better working environment for his team. The Heavy-Duty Neutral Floor Cleaner was easy to use, and he liked how it can be used on numerous types of surfaces.

Remarkable Savings and Improved Morale

  • Labor savings: Reduced finishing time from five days to one and a half days, saving over $1,200 per application.
  • Improved morale: Coder received outstanding feedback from his team. The process is faster and more pleasant smelling than the products they used previously.
  • Longer-lasting floors: The durable finish is expected to last up to six months longer than previous methods.

“This stripping process is much faster and works much better than the products we previously used,” Coder concluded. “We use half as much product to strip the floor in less than half the time.”
