ISSA Sponsors Greener Cleaning Playbook for Sports Facilities

ISSA is proud and honored to be both a contributor and sponsor of the Greener Cleaning Playbook released by the Green Sports Alliance at the organization’s annual Summit which was held at Chicago’s McCormick Place in late June 2015.

The Greener Cleaning Playbook, authored by Stephen Ashkin, President, The Ashkin Group, is designed to help sports facilities reduce the health and environmental impact associated with cleaning and maintaining sports venues. The Green Sports Alliance is a non-profit group of professional and collegiate sports organizations dedicated to “…inspiring sports leagues, teams, venues, their partners and millions of fans to embrace renewable energy, healthy food, recycling, water efficiency, species preservation, safer chemicals and other environmentally preferable practices.”

Highlights. The Greener Cleaning Playbook is designed to provide guidance to professional and collegiate sports facility managers about the implementation of an environmentally responsible approach to cleaning and maintenance. As such the Playbook addresses:

  • Selection of a greener cleaning service provider which recommends certification pursuant to the ISSA Cleaning Industry Management Standard for Green Buildings as a method of prequalifying contractors;
  • Selection of greener products including cleaning chemicals, sanitary paper products, cleaning equipment, and other related product categories; and
  • Case studies.

Sustainability and the Cleaning Industry. The cleaning industry has long recognized and has been committed to the critical role cleaning plays in protecting public health. But it has been only recently that we have gained a deeper appreciation and understanding of the valuable role cleaning plays in support of the sustainability goals of the facilities we serve.

“Whether it be an office building, a school or a sports venue, a high performance green cleaning program significantly reduces human exposure to toxic substances, reduces the amount of harmful pollutants entering our waste streams and the environment, and conserves our scarce resources,” according to Bill Balek, Director of Legislative and Environmental Services, ISSA.

And now thanks to the Green Sports Alliance, sports venues have the perfect game plan in the form of the Greener Cleaning Playbook for implementing green cleaning programs that can further improve the environmental and health profile of professional and collegiate sports venues across the nation.
