The Intersection of Cleaning for a Reason and Caring for Cancer Patients

Cleaning for a Reason provides home cleaning services for cancer patients, free of charge.

For many, a clean home also equals a peaceful environment. That equation becomes even more important if a person living in that home is battling cancer. Yet, when someone is facing radiation and chemotherapy treatments, cleaning one’s own home can be extremely difficult, and in some cases, downright impossible.

Enter Cleaning for a Reason, an ISSA Charities™ signature program that provides home cleaning services for cancer patients, free of charge.

In this episode of Straight Talk!, ISSA Media Director Jeff Cross discusses the program’s history and many benefits with Cleaning for a Reason’s founder, Debbie Sardone. She is also the president of Bucket & Bows Maid Service Inc. and owner of Speed Cleaning, both based in Texas.

Cleaning for a Reason started, Debbie says, as “an idea from a missed opportunity.” A potential client had called and turned down Sardone’s price quote for cleaning services, explaining that her cancer treatments wouldn’t allow for the expense. “Why didn’t I think to give her the cleaning for free?” she asked herself upon hanging up the phone. “I could have afforded it. We have the staff. Why didn’t that occur to me?”

“I met with my staff. We made a decision that day that anybody battling cancer that called our office and could not afford our services, we would just give it to them for free.”

Today, with the help of ISSA, that idea has gone nationwide and beyond as Cleaning for a Reason serves cancer patients in both the United States and Canada.  More than 47,000 patients have had their home cleaned thanks to the nonprofit organization and the 1,200 cleaning businesses who partner with it.
