Flooded Lead Acid Battery Advancements
Improvements to Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA) batteries included using positive plate grid alloys to help prevent grid corrosion, a cause of poor performance and failures in FLA batteries. Adding
selenium to the grid alloys enhanced it, which increases strength and electrical conductivity. The result was a reduction in positive grid
corrosion as a primary failure mode, and cycle life was significantly increased.
Improvements to the grid’s active materials in a battery’s positive electrodes increased initial battery capacity, reduced the number of cycles to the full rated capacity, generated higher peak
capacity, and improved charging using various charger technologies.
Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Battery Improvements
As cleaning machines continued to advance, the industry wanted maintenance-free options. U.S. Battery introduced its maintenance-free, deep-cycle AGM batteries, which it later updated
with thicker positive alloy grids for exceptional corrosion resistance, high-density positive active material, and advanced glass mat separators. These maintain the battery cell structure during
deep cycling and limit acid stratification when batteries sit for long periods. U.S. Battery also improved its AGMs with carbon-enhanced negative active material, improving charge acceptance and cycling performance.
