Forging the Future

This past summer, the Cleaning and Maintenance Management (CMM) team began the process of reviewing its website and offerings with an eye toward refreshing and improving the CMM brand.

The process has been intensive for CMM staff. We’ve met with multiple vendors, had many brainstorming meetings about features and content that we want to bolster, and have even surveyed our audience base with the intention of uncovering what types of content matters most to our readers.

Thanks to almost 600 survey respondents, we were able to see that 57 percent of readers are either approaching or past retirement age. That’s a large percentage of industry professionals who have the potential to age out of the workforce within the next few decades. With that in mind, it’s important for CMM to start strategizing now on how to best impact our readers down the road—and others in the industry should start doing the same.

The cleaning industry is not the only industry facing the predicament of an aging workforce. In fact, a 2015 study of 1,900 human resources professionals conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management said more than one-third of respondents “were preparing for the projected increase in the proportion of older workers… by ‘beginning to examine internal policies and management practices.’”

With this in mind, and with the launch of CMM’s new website on the horizon, it’s only appropriate that this month’s cover story focus on “Planning for the Future,” and how readers can start to prepare for the next steps in their organizations’ legacies. In this issue you’ll find tips on how and when to start planning in addition to best practices for ensuring there are people to step in and (successfully) fill the gaps.

Additionally, for those of you who are attending ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2017 in Las Vegas, NV, this month, be sure to attend the session on “Preparing Your Business for the Next Generation.” This session, among many others at this year’s trade show, can serve as a great resource for helping to set up your organization for success. You can learn more on what to expect during this year’s ISSA/INTERCLEAN trade show by checking out our show coverage.

Looking forward to seeing you in Las Vegas, and sharing updates on CMM with all of you in the coming months.
