Manual Sewer Cleaning Banned After 10th Death

A complete ban on the manual cleaning of sewers has been issued by the government of New Delhi, India, after the 10th death of a sewer cleaner within 35 days, according to FirstPost.com. Anyone who violates the rule will be charged with culpable homicide.

A 50-year-old sanitation worker was the 10th worker to die when he, along with three other co-workers, entered a toxic, gas-filled sewer line without any safety equipment on Sunday, according to The Times of India. The private contractor who hired the workers left town to escape charges. A New Delhi government committee had already begun investigating mechanized cleaning of drains and sewers following previous deaths of sanitation workers.
