Toilets Demanded by India’s Muslim Clerics

A lack of toilets in Northern India’s residential homes prompted a refusal by local Muslim clerics to perform marriage ceremonies if the groom’s side of the residence does not include a toilet.

Maulana Mahmood A Madani, secretary general of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, an Indian Islamic Organization, said the resolution was passed for the Indian states of Haryana, Punjab, and Himachal with an extension to other states in the future. Madani made the proposal during the inauguration of the Assam Conference on Sanitation last week.

“There are two types of cleaning—one is external and the other internal,” Madani told India.com. “Both are interconnected, we will only be able to achieve the internal cleaning if our body is clean.”
