Whether or not you are into setting New Year’s resolutions for yourself, it is important to actively set goals. According to a report from the University of Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 8 percent of those who set resolutions actually achieve their goals. While there are many reasons for this less-than-stellar success rate, most often the goal lacks a plan or we attempt to accomplish more than one goal simultaneously and fail. However, those who define a specific resolution are 10 times more likely to accomplish their goal. Goal-setting helps to define both short- and long-term strategy. The exercise itself provides motivation and guidance to maximize the decision-making process, helps set forth policy, and establishes the means necessary to achieve the larger goals. But don’t stop at setting goals; it is equally important to review your goals on a regular basis to refocus and ensure that you are staying on course.
