Health Care Facility Design Can Help Attract Employees

March 16, 2022

Like other industries, health care is experiencing a worker shortage across the board, from housekeepers and maintenance technicians to nurses and therapists. Facility managers can help with the health care labor challenge by upgrading buildings to make them more appealing to current and potential employees, Healthcare Facilities Today reports.

To help avoid worker turnover and attract new employees, facility managers can focus on three key areas when planning building renovations and expansions:

  • Lighting – Harsh lighting can make a building unattractive and become tiring in the middle of a long shift. Lighting technology can provide an atmosphere that is pleasant, not tiring, to work in.
  • Nature – Exposure to natural environments benefits the healing process and workplace morale. Bringing the outdoors into an indoor environment through green plants, fountains, and other natural elements can help rejuvenate workers who must spend a lot of time indoors.
  • Recovery spaces – Health care workers are on their feet most of the day. Providing relaxing places throughout the facility for them to sit and rest is key.
