Honolulu Airport Implements Cleaning Robot Technology

According to a recent press release, the Hawaii Department of Transportation Airports Division (HDOT-A) is introducing two automatic floor cleaners to its Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) in Honolulu to supplement and modernize its janitorial services.

The cost of the two robotic floor scrubbers, manufactured by Tennant Co., along with the training of their use, is US$157,000.

“The robotic scrubbers will help us keep HNL sanitary and sparkling,” explained Ross Higashi, Hawaii Department of Transportation deputy director of airports. “Use of this technology will also allow us to maximize available staff in maintaining our busiest airport to standards.”

According to Higashi, the first robotic scrubber has already been deployed in the airport’s 230,000-square-foot Mauka Concourse. “We’re excited to continue training staff and getting the second unit out on the floor,” he said.
