Small Businesses Looking for More Federal Support

Survey finds small businesses need grants or low-interest loans

December 1, 2021

Almost two years after many companies closed their doors at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, many business owners say they are still struggling and could use additional help from the federal government, according to a national policy poll by Alignable, a referral network for small businesses.

The poll of 3,464 small business owners conducted this fall found that 64% believe the U.S. government is not providing enough support to help business recovery. Beyond the 64%, only 10% believed the federal government is doing all it can, while the remaining 26% were not sure.

When asked what actions they would like to see from national policymakers to help small businesses with their recovery, half of respondents requested additional financial relief. Among these respondents:

  • 31% want government grants or new forgivable or low-interest loans
  • 19% want lower taxes for small businesses.

Although most small business owners in all states want additional support from the federal government, there is some fluctuation across the country. Among respondents in Texas, 77% said they need extra help from the federal government. Other states with a high percentage of small businesses requesting help include:

  • Pennsylvania: 68%
  • Florida: 66%
  • New York: 62%
  • Illinois: 62%
  • Virginia: 61%
  • California: 59%
  • Massachusetts: 53%.
