Bacteria-Ridden Garments Finally Getting Attention

Radiological Care Services (RCS), has begun to offer cleaning services for lead-lined apparel in hospitals that previously rarely got sanitized.

The Indianapolis, IN-based cleaning service is providing a 48-hour turnaround cleaning service specifically for radiation-reducing clothing used by doctors and patients. RCS currently handles 25,000 articles from roughly 40 area hospitals.

The garments can contain up to nine times the bacteria levels of a gas pump handle, as measured by an ATP testing meter. Furthermore, 84 percent of the aprons tested had ringworm or staphylococcus present, according to The Indianapolis Star.
