Avoid Cross Contamination With the Right Supplies and Accessories

Half the battle in cleaning is choosing the correct supplies to get the job done quickly and efficiently. One item that is a mainstay in every custodian’s caddy or cart is the microfiber cleaning cloth.

Not only are these simple cloths effective at picking up dust and dirt, they come in a variety of colors, which makes them an ideal tool for preventing cross contamination.

Using the same cleaning tool in a restroom sink that you used in a restroom stall is a recipe for spreading germs that you worked hard to eliminate. Microfiber cloths makes it easy to remember to use a fresh cloth for each area and each room. You can set up your own color-coded system, or use the following chart:

• Red: sanitary appliances, restroom floors, toilets, and urinals
• Yellow: restroom surfaces, including sinks, towel dispensers, hand dryers, soap dispensers, door handles, and walls
• Green: general food and bar cleanup in non-preparatory food areas, such as lunchrooms
• Blue: areas at low risk of contamination, such as hallways, offices, and classrooms.

Microfiber cloths and mops are among the cleaning supplies and accessories entered in the 2019 ISSA Innovation Award Program. All entries will be on display on the show floor at ISSA Shown North America 2019 in Las Vegas. There will be a winner for each category, as well as one overall winner.
