CDC Reports No New Measles Cases

September 18, 2019

Just a few days after New York City health officials declared the city’s measles outbreak was officially over, no new measles cases were reported in the U.S. the week of September 6-12, the first time since January, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

After a peak of 342 reported cases in April alone, the number of measles cases reported has declined each month after with only 24 in August.

Since January 1, 1,241 individual cases have been confirmed in 31 states, the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1992.

More than 75% of the cases this year are linked to outbreaks in New York, in communities where groups of people are unvaccinated.

As of September 12, 130 of the people who were infected with measles this year were hospitalized, and 65 reported having complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis.
