Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day
Follow social distancing orders by rallying online through virtual events
As many businesses in the cleaning industry implement sustainability and green cleaning practices, Earth Day is a time to celebrate their successes and make plans to increase their efforts. This Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, making it an especially memorable occasion.
Millions of people worldwide are expected to mark Earth Day 2020 on Wednesday April 22, but they will be rallying online instead of in parks, stadiums, and universities around the world as previously expected, USA Today reports.
“Amid the recent outbreak, we encourage people to rise up but to do so safely and responsibly — in many cases, that means using our voices to drive action online rather than in person,” said Kathleen Rogers, president of Earth Day Network.
Over the 24 hours of Earth Day, the Earth Day Network will host virtual global conversations, calls to action, performances, video teach-ins, and more. In addition to signing up for these events people can participate by creating a poster and sharing it on social media with hashtags like #EarthDayNetwork; attending a virtual presentation organized by students, universities and other leaders; watching a performance; and playing trivia games. Although it may be difficult for people to feel encouraged and hopeful for the planet amid the coronavirus pandemic, and before that, the damaging wildfires in Australia and California, Earth Day co-founder Denis Hayes encourages people not to lose faith.
“It is depressing,” Hayes said. “But I’ve got a message for you: We’ve not reached the end of the line. We’ve still got time to be able to turn this around before we reach tipping points that do become irreversible.”
