September 22, 2021

Saturday, September 18 was both National CleanUp Day® and International Coastal Cleanup DayTM. Volunteers across the U.S. pitched in to clear their neighborhoods, empty lots, beaches, and river beds of trash.

More than 2,500 volunteers cleaned up 35 sites along Southern California, including beaches, rivers, and inland sites, Spectrum News 1-TV reports. They cleaned more than 50 miles of outdoor areas, collecting more than 5,000 pounds of trash and 156 pounds of recyclables.

In Bakersfield, California, about 40 volunteers removed trash under a bridge, hauling away 75 large trash bags and many bulky items that didn’t fit into bags, California News Times reports.

A carpet and a shopping cart were among the items more than 1,000 volunteers from Santa Clarita removed from the Santa Clara riverbed on Saturday, reports The Signal.

In Kentucky, about 50 volunteers in Laurel and Floyd counties not only removed trash along the roads, they picked weeds and applied fresh paint to downtown areas in Prestonsburg, WYMT-TV reports.
