Community Bands Together to Surprise Custodian With New Car

School worker no longer has to walk 18 miles each day to job

August 14, 2019

The faculty at Doherty Elementary School recently presented long-time custodian Andrea Smith with a new car.

Smith made news earlier this year when a story on a local television channel spotlighted her dedication to her job. Smith walks more than nine miles each way from her home in Pontiac, Mich. to the West Bloomfield Township, Mich. school.

Inspired by her dedication, the faculty started a GoFund me page to purchase her a new car. The page raised more than US$8,000 in a little over a month. A local Chevrolet dealer then contributed an additional $3,000, WXYZ-TV reports.

“We’re just thrilled that we can do this for her and that she has a safe and reliable way to come to work and she’s an important party of our Doherty family,” said Nancy Goldstein, a teacher at Doherty Elementary.
