Fewer Americans Plan to Spring Clean

Survey finds homebound Americans have been cleaning throughout the pandemic

March 11, 2021

The annual cleaning survey from the American Cleaning Institute reveals that 69% of Americans plan to spring clean this year, down from 78% in 2020.

The survey results do not mean Americans plan to slack off this spring. Instead, it found that more than half (55%) have been cleaning more than usual due to the coronavirus pandemic and being stuck at home. As a result, their homes are not as dirty and in need of one big cleaning as in years past.

Among those who plan to spring clean, 54% say they plan to clean and organize the same amount in 2021 compared to 2020, while 37% said they plan to clean more this year. The top spots they will focus on include:

  • Kitchen (26%)
  • Bathroom (19%)
  • Closet (19%)
  • Bedroom (18%)
  • Family room (13%)

More than one-third (37%) of survey respondents said they have more cleaning knowledge now than before the pandemic due to increased messaging from cleaning and health experts on the importance of disinfecting surfaces.
