Focusing on Priority Areas When Cleaning for Senior Care Facilities

Keeping these important areas clean is critical for maintaining the health and well-being of older adults.

July 20, 2022

When maintaining the cleanliness of a building, it is, of course, important to keep all areas clean. But there are some key areas that, when kept clean, can make a huge impact on the well-being of its inhabitants. This is specifically true of senior care facilities, whose older adult population is particularly vulnerable to illness and disease.

According to an article by Healthcare Facilities Today, there are “critical touch points” in senior care facilities that, if ignored or not properly cleaned, can introduce serious health problems. These areas should always be the priority in a facility’s cleaning regiment.

In the article, Phil Carrizales, director of hygiene and facilities solutions at Acme Paper & Supply Co. Inc., identified such priorities, including:

  • Door handles
  • Faucets
  • Food trays
  • Countertops
  • Chairs
  • Tables
  • Light switches
  • Toilet handles
  • Handrails
  • Elevator buttons.

Healthcare Facilities Today also states the importance of training staff on the proper use of cleaning solutions and chemicals on these crucial areas. Staying on top of what, where, and how cleaning products are being used can further help senior residents remain healthy and safe in their environment.
