Minnesota Labor Unions Unite for Change

Strategic mobilization aims for sweeping labor and social improvements for janitors and other workers.

November 2, 2023

As reported by In These Times, Minnesota is experiencing a historic labor mobilization, with various unions synchronizing their contract expirations in a strategic push for improved working conditions, environmental sustainability, and social equity. This culmination of a decade-long planning effort is poised to impact thousands of workers across diverse sectors.

SEIU Local 26, representing 4,000 commercial janitors, is one of the many unions on the brink of contract expiration in the state. Contracts for 1,000 airport workers and 500 retail janitors will end on January 31, 2024.

Despite negotiating separately, the unions, which include workers in education and healthcare as well, are unified in their strategic timeline, aiming to pool resources and strategize for greater impact, according to In These Times. Emphasizing the importance of solidarity, Eva Lopez, SEIU Local 26 vice president of its retail division, stated, “Today we ask what could we win together? We will bring these demands together because we know all of our struggles are linked.”

Lopez was once a professional cleaner at the Marriott hotel located inside the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota—the same venue where the unions met in October to strategize for a future of fair work, good schools, stable housing, and a livable planet. Discussed topics went beyond the typical labor demands of better pay and benefits, to include environmental protections, affordable housing, and improved public education.

With specific actions yet to be decided, Minnesota’s labor movement is laying the groundwork for potential mass action and strikes in 2024, marking a bold step in U.S. labor history and exemplifying the power of strategic planning and collective action.
