Restroom Rickshaws Provide Relief on the Go

August 23, 2021

An Indian entrepreneur came up with a solution on wheels to bring clean restrooms and jobs to women in her country. Sushma Kallempudi is bringing mobile toilets mounted on electric auto-rickshaws to large gatherings, the European Journal reports.

The compact rickshaws can be easily driven through crowded areas and parked anywhere to offer restrooms where they are needed. Each unit contains a toilet, a washbasin, and a mirror. Future units will feature sanitary napkin dispensers, baby changing stations, and power-charging sockets.

Kallempudi came up with the idea to address a chronic shortage of clean public restrooms for women in India. As all the rickshaws are operated and maintained by women for added privacy, the initiative will also provide more employment opportunities for them.
