Salmonella Outbreak Spreads to 35 States

October 11, 2021

Health officials are still investigating the cause of a salmonella outbreak that has spread to six more states, Penn Live reports.

The latest report from the U.S. Centers from Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that 419 people in 35 states have been sickened by the outbreak. Of those sickened, 66 have been hospitalized. No one has died.

Although the CDC was previously investigating limes and cilantro as a source of the outbreak, it has not yet identified a definite food link to the illness.

Symptoms of illness caused by salmonella bacteria include diarrhea, fever, dehydration, and abdominal cramps. So far, most cases have been reported in Texas, followed by Oklahoma and Virginia.

CDC officials say it is likely a higher number of people than 419 have been sickened by the outbreak. Many people recover from salmonella illness without medical care, so they are never tested for salmonella bacteria. Also, recent illnesses may not yet be reported as it usually takes three to four weeks to determine if a sick person is part of an outbreak.
