School Custodian Leads Students to Chess Victory

June 5, 2023

As recently reported by The Washington Post, a custodian at George B. Weatherbee Elementary School in Hampden, Maine, has been doing double duty by also serving as the school’s chess coach.

David Bishop, 61, who has been the school’s full-time custodian for the past six years, oversees its chess club and coaches its award-winning competitive chess team. He also runs the chess program at a middle school in the same district.

“It just grew naturally,” he told The Post regarding his chess coaching. “I might be trying to make up for what I missed when I was in grade school and high school. I didn’t have a team, and I wasn’t in a club.”
