The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) recently awarded its Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold green building certification to a 390,000-square-foot retail and residential complex in Chicago, IL.
The USGBC recognized the facility, constructed in 2015 by Structured Development, for its waste disposal program during construction, which recycled more than 75 percent of waste. Additionally, 20 percent of the construction cost was used to purchase, source, and manufacture materials within 500 miles of the construction site, reducing the environmental impact of transportation, Commercial Property Executive reports.
The completed complex also includes a storm water management system which decreases rain water runoff by 25 percent and low-flow water fixtures to reduce water consumption by 30 percent..The property’s roof features a 83,000-square-foot green roof element to reduce the complex’s heat island effect.
