10,000 Contract Companies Hit by Shutdown

The impact of by the federal government shutdown goes far beyond those working in federal buildings

January 21, 2019

The number of contract employees feeling the financial burden of the U.S. government shutdown is larger than originally anticipated.

Not only does the shutdown impact the 2,000 federal building workers that CMM and other news sources originally reported on; but The Washington Post is now saying there are 10,000 federally contracted companies that are also missing paydays. The value of the unpaid federal bills equates to about US$200 million a week, which you can bet is also trickling down to the contract company staff.

“No one knows how many workers are affected, and overall estimates of total federal contract workers range from hundreds of thousands to millions,” the Washington Post said. “It’s also unknown how many have had to stop work, but company and industry officials say financial pressures on contractors are building.”

Contractors with the federal government perform a variety of facility management responsibilities, ranging from housekeeping to security.
