CDC Declares the End of 2021-2022 Flu Season

July 6, 2022

Between the extra cleaning and maintenance tasks required during the summer season, and news of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic and now monkeypox, you’re probably not thinking about the flu too much. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued its last report on the 2021-2022 season.

The CDC estimates that from October 1, 2021 through June 11, 2022 there have been:

  • 8 million to 13 million flu illnesses
  • 3.7 million to 6.1 million flu medical visits
  • 82,000 to 170,000 flu hospitalizations
  • 5,000 to 14,000 flu deaths.

The CDC has not yet determined the estimated cumulative burden of flu for the 2021-2022 flu season. It was not able to calculate the cumulative burden of flu for the 2020-2021 season, due to historically low numbers of influenza.

For now, the CDC believes the 2021-2022 flu season was also a mild season. However, influenza testing across the United States may have been higher than normal because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
