IICRC Endorses Latest Federal Mold Remediation Legislation
The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), an ANSI-accredited standards-setting body for the flooring inspection, floor covering, and specialized fabric cleaning and disaster restoration industries, has expressed its endorsement of the Fix Moldy Housing Act.
The bipartisan legislation was introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives last week by Reps. Haley Stevens (D-MI) and Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR). This bill authorizes a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) study and creates voluntary standards on how to best assess and remediate mold, provides funds to establish licensure programs to train proper assessment and remediation, and allocates funds for states and tribal governments to safely assess and remove mold from homes and public buildings.
“We often see federal regulators adopting various standards and educational documents,” said Mili Washington, IICRC standards director, “and we believe this is an ideal opportunity for the EPA to incorporate the ANSI/IICRC S520 Standard for Professional Mold Remediation by reference when issuing the nonbinding standards discussed in this legislation.”
