Ramp Up Your Hand Hygiene in Support of Global Handwashing Day October 15
Survey finds decline in handwashing since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic
As COVID-19 cases increase with the cooler fall weather, and cold and flu seasons approach, it is now more important than ever to wash your hands with soap. However, many people who were diligent about handwashing at the beginning of the pandemic this spring have lost steam this fall as we prepare to commemorate Global Handwashing Day, October 15. According to a recent survey conducted by Ipsos for the American Cleaning Institute (ACI) frequent handwashing declined 14% six months into the pandemic.
ACI surveyed 1,005 Americans, first in March, then again in September. Researchers tracked significant changes in American cleaning behaviors between the two surveys. According to their findings:
- There is a decline in frequent handwashing, with 64% of Americans washing their hands frequently in September compared to 78% in March.
- Hand sanitizer use is on the rise, with 62% of respondents reporting using it in September versus 46% in March.
- Half of the respondents continue to be mindful about washing their hands for at least 20 seconds —58% in March versus 51% in September.
In addition to helping stop the spread of viruses, handwashing is known to reduce acute respiratory infections by 20%, according to the Global Handwashing Partnership. Global Handwashing Day was founded by the Global Handwashing Partnership in 2008 as an advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives. This year’s theme is “Hand Hygiene for All.”
