EVS Worker’s Piano Music Soothes Patients, Staff
According to WTXF-TV, the musical talents of an environmental services (EVS) worker at St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorn, Pennsylvania, has been comforting the patients, staff, and visitors since he was hired in September.
Calvin Dingle, 33, saw a baby grand piano in the hospital lobby following his work orientation session and asked Alyssa Page, the hospital’s housekeeping manager, if he could play it.
“It’s kind of hard to keep me away from a piano,” Dingle told WRXF. “Once I see a piano in any type of facility that I work at, I’m just drawn to it.”
“He started playing, and it just echoed through the hallways,” said Page. “Ever since then, he’s been the star of the show with the piano.”
Inspired by actor and musician Jamie Foxx, Dingle is a self-taught pianist with no formal musical training past singing in a church choir. He borrowed a library book—Music Composition for Dummies—to learn how to play.
Dingle, who works the night shift, uses his break time to entertain and inspire those at the medical center.
“It’s just uplifting, and I feel like it takes you somewhere else,” Angie Wong, a nurse at the medical center, told WRXF. “He’s an awesome person. He lights up the room.”
“Just to know that I have the opportunity to touch the lives and hearts of people, it brings a joy to me,” Dingle said.
