Facilities Take the Lead on Earth Day
Organizations examine how to cut costs and consume less energy
Spring cleaning and Earth Day go together as individuals and organizations stop to think how to clean up the earth and make it a better place to live for generations to come. Businesses can use activities planned for today as a springboard for them to examine ways to cut costs and consume less energy in their facilities.
The first Earth Day was commemorated in 1970 and the annual observance is now a movement for sustainability that highlights the importance of cutting greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere. The United Nation’s World Meteorological Organization released its State of the Global Climate 2020 report this week, which warns that “time is fast running out” to keep global temperatures in check, Yahoo News reports. U.S. President Joe Biden hosted leaders from 40 countries for a virtual summit as the U.S. seeks to cut emissions by at least 50% from 2005 levels.
Businesses can be involved this Earth Day 2021 by joining earthday.org’s climate action live streaming—the world’s largest environment movement working with more than 75,000 partners in over 192 countries. The virtual event will consist of panel discussions and special performances from world leaders focusing on the Earth Day 2021’s theme, Restore Our Earth, and offers a toolkit with ideas on how organizations can make a difference.
The panel discussions will cover natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. Topics will include:
- Climate and environmental literacy
- Climate restoration technologies
- Reforestation efforts
- Regenerative agriculture
- Equity and environmental justice
- Citizen science
- Cleanups, and more.
